JV General 603 - Detail Page

We had a photographer visit the stud where we were collecting General last winter and take a whole roll of film. I sorted through the pictures and picked out some that show his pigmentation and profile. Everyone who has seen General comments on his length. Most of his pictures don't show this very well, including the ones we've used so far in our advertising. But I almost used this shot of him in our July Hereford World ad because it really expresses his length well. (I didn't use it because of that telephone pole that appears to be growing out of his back.)

General excels in all three dimensions. Not only is he long, he is deep chested and thick. While you can pick a bull apart forever, I've included the photo at left which clearly shows the bull's depth and width. He also has smooth, tapered shoulders in spite of that width. As of August he weighed 2,200 lbs. and was 58 inches tall.

As for color, General is medium red. Darker than many horned Hereford cattle in the western and northwestern US, but not nearly as dark as many southeastern polled Herefords get. A shade lighter than the middle of the spectrum, perhaps.

All the photos I've ever seen of General are taken from the left, so there aren't many showing the pigment on his right eye. This frontal shot does pretty well. In the blowup you can see significant pigmentation.
This is the view from the left, like we're used to seeing. There is a smaller amount here, but clearly present.
Most of the pictures we've used give a clear view of the scrotum, which is almost fully pigmented. He has excellent testicular development -- 40cm at 12 months of age and perfectly set.

JV General 603's dam produced two calves at Venhuizens'. The first was a heifer calf by Churchill Bang 500. This heifer had a birth weight of 92 lbs., a weaning weight ratio of 118.0 and yearling weight ratio of 120.0. Her second calf was 603. He had a birth weight of 65 lbs., weaning weight ratio of 105.0, and yearling weight ratio of 111.0. Her calving interval between these two calves was 332 days.
